It's been 46 days since my doctor called me to tell me about the BC and honestly, it's hard to put into words all that has happened... but I'll try b/c let's face it, I'm rarely at a loss for words. Feel free to text/email/DM/call me to say hi! xo
Medical update
I had surgery on November 1 at Sharp Mary Birch (where I was born!) and it went great. I love my surgeon and the care and attention I received were unparalleled. Tessa and two of the boys took me to my surgery which made for a fun, silly and distracting car ride there. I have to say, my thyroid surgery last year made me so much calmer for this one. It really prepared me and I'm grateful for that experience.
My mom met me at the hospital and was with me the whole day. First I had to get the radioactive dye injected into my right side. It tracks the lymph drainage path so they can see which node to remove. The dye turned my pee electric blue for a day which was incredibly entertaining and made me laugh a ton. Tessa stayed with me and we had some good medically-forced sister time. 💜
The day before surgery I was talking to my BFF Alex and told her I wished she still lived here so we could chill on the couch Saturday while I recovered. Twenty minutes later she texted that she booked her flight and would arrange to get to my house the next morning. I burst into tears. She is an incredible friend and we had a fun weekend together while I healed. We wen to our fave Mexican spot and some friends sent me DoorDash gift cards so we had food for days, haha.
The surgery went well and I'm healing nicely. The lymph node was clear (yay)! They missed the margin on one side so I do have to go back in for another surgery (likely in the next couple weeks) but it will be a shorter day. It was a 20% chance this would happen and I have extremely dense tissue so it was the perfect storm for it.
Life update
Life is good! As I wrote last time, I've been prioritizing myself and really tuning into what I need/want. I played golf at The Golf Bar on Monday and felt good! I have golf planned on Friday with a friend and Saturday with my Babes Golf girls!
I worked a sh*t ton these past few days getting everything ready for the Artists Against Antisemitism Online Auction - Check it out here! The event has already raised over $20K in less than 10 hours since it launched.
We also took on a new client this month, The Bird Rock Massage Studio. If you are in San Diego, they have two locations and OMG best massage of my life. Shameless plug but honestly just go already.
I've been planning things but also am a bit beholden to the fact that I'm still healing + will have a 6-week radiation schedule to work around.
what i'm looking forward to right now
Golfing
Holiday decorations
Christmas themed-bar visits
Christmas parties
Disneyland Holiday
My ask of you
There's something about all of this that feels like I'm being called into advocacy... that we need to advocate for ourselves, and our health. I encourage any woman under 40 to book a mammogram. Yes, it's out of pocket but it's worth the diligence of knowing and taking care of yourself. BC doesn't turn "on" when you turn 40... so please, if you are in your 30s, go get checked. This company is a mobile detection and is all over the US. Or if you are over 40, go to your yearly and get checked (see fashionable cape photo above). Or if you are a guy, go to your doctor, bend over and cough.
I'll leave you with this.
